Evidence-Based. Practical. Accessible.

WHO WE ARE

Midtown Therapy Group is home to Midtown DBT, one of Ontario’s leading DBT Skills providers delivering evidence-based individual DBT therapy, DBT Skills Groups, and comprehensive DBT support.

WHAT IS DBT?

Practical Skills for Managing Emotions, Navigating
Relationships, and Building a Life Worth Living

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) means the “existence of opposites.” DBT balances acceptance and change, helping you feel understood while also supporting meaningful growth. DBT is one of the most well-researched treatments for emotional dysregulation, with decades of research showing significant reduction in self-harm, suicidal behaviours, and emotional distress. We offer individual DBT therapy, DBT Skills Groups, and comprehensive DBT support.

For many clients, group-only DBT is the right fit, offering high-quality skills training, and practical tools without the cost or intensity of a full comprehensive DBT program.

Comprehensive DBT combines individual therapy, DBT skills groups, and phone coaching in an evidence-based model that has shown strong outcomes for individuals experiencing emotional dysregulation, high-risk behaviours, or more complex mental health concerns. Comprehensive DBT is not indicated for all cases.

Most adolescents participate in both individual therapy and DBT Skills Group, though this is not required. If you are unsure which format is the right fit, we will help you figure that out during your consultation.

Midtown DBT was founded as a clinic with a clear goal: to offer an affordable, accessible DBT option that stays true to the evidence and the model. Many clients start with one service and add another over time as their needs evolve.

WHAT WE TREAT WITH DBT

DBT is designed to support individuals who experience intense emotions, feel overwhelmed, or have difficulty coping in effective ways. DBT can also support individuals who feel “stuck” in unhelpful patterns and are looking for practical tools to create meaningful, lasting change.

Research has demonstrated DBT to be effective in treating a range of concerns, including BPD, self-harm and suicidal behaviour, eating disorders, substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and more.

Individual DBT Therapy

Work with a DBT-trained clinician to understand the core modules, which will help you recognize patterns, learn skills, and use tools such as chain analysis to identify what gets in the way of change. This also includes phone coaching between sessions to help you apply DBT skills in real-life situations.

Comprehensive DBT Program

For individuals experiencing more intense emotional dysregulation, ongoing crises, or patterns such as self-harm, impulsivity, or relationship instability, Comprehensive DBT offers a higher level of support. This program combines weekly individual therapy, DBT skills group, and phone coaching, forming an evidence-based model that has shown strong outcomes for people navigating complex emotional and behavioural challenges.

Specialized DBT Skills Groups

We offer DBT Skills Groups shaped around the experiences of specific communities and life stages.

Current offerings include:

This group is designed for individuals who identify as neurodivergent, or who are in the process of exploring what that means for them. Led by a neurodivergent facilitator, DBT skills are taught through a neuroaffirming lens, with adaptations for sensory sensitivities, executive functioning, and social communication differences. The group also creates space to explore experiences like masking and rejection sensitivity, and recognizes how neurodivergence intersects with other aspects of identity and mental health.

Led by a facilitator who is part of the community, this group integrates DBT skills with Minority Stress Theory to reflect the real experiences of LGBTQ+ participants. Sessions address rejection sensitivity, internalized stigma, experiences of cisgenderism and heterosexism, and the layered complexity of identity expression, concealment, and coming out, alongside the full DBT skills curriculum.

For adults ages 18–26(ish), this group addresses the specific pressures of early adulthood: identity, relationships, school or career stress, and the work of building an independent life. In a relatable, low-judgment environment, participants develop skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness, with a focus on building confidence and creating a life that feels more manageable.

For teens ages 12–17, this group is built around the realities of high school life: academic pressure, friendships, family dynamics, and big emotions. Teens learn skills in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness in an engaging, age-appropriate setting. The goal is to feel more in control at school, at home, and in relationships. Ideally, a caregiver also participates in the biweekly Parent & Caregiver DBT Skills Group.

A biweekly group for parents and caregivers. While most participants have a child enrolled in our Adolescent DBT Skills Group, the group is open to any parent or caregiver who wants to build skills for navigating emotional intensity, improving communication, reducing conflict, and supporting their own wellbeing alongside their child.

For clients who have previously completed a DBT Skills Group and want to strengthen what they have learned. This group focuses on consistency, troubleshooting real-life challenges, and deepening how skills show up in everyday situations. Modules are 12 sessions.

For clients who have completed DBT Skills Groups here or elsewhere (minimum 20 weeks), this group moves beyond structured learning into deeper application. Sessions are topic and discussion based, with more space for reflection, nuance, and exploring how skills translate across the complexity of real life.

For teens who have already completed DBT Skills Group modules here or elsewhere, this advanced group offers a space to continue practicing, strengthening, and applying DBT skills.

Sessions focus on using skills in real-life situations, including friendships, family relationships, school stress, intense emotions, and everyday challenges.

This course is offered at a reduced rate.
